St. Pete Reads! Day
Proclamation
WHEREAS, Literacy is opportunity. Literacy is power. Literacy leads to change. At Cultured Books Literacy Foundation, they believe that literacy is more than just reading and writing and;
WHEREAS, Cultured Books Literacy Foundation exists to inspire the youth of South St. Pete to engage with literacy by celebrating culturally responsive literacy experiences; and
WHEREAS, Through their work, Cultured Books Literacy Foundation is building a community where children, and their families, live a literacy lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, Since 2018, Cultured Books Literacy Foundation has committed itself to developing programs that enable children and families to actively participate in a literacy lifestyle through a variety of engagements and has developed St. Pete Reads! to that end; and,
WHEREAS, The first St. Pete Reads! Literacy Day will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5th, 2022 and take place annually on the first Saturday of November in recognition of National Family Literacy Month; and,
WHEREAS, To kickoff St. Pete Reads! Day, Cultured Books Literacy Foundation, in partnership with Barbershop Book Club and St. Petersburg College, will host the inaugural St. Pete Reads! Lit Fest at The Woodson African American Museum of Florida for a day of storytelling, workshops, and book signings with #kidlit writers.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kenneth T. Welch, Mayor of the City of St. Petersburg, do hereby proclaim November 5th, 2022 as,
St. Pete Reads! Day
and urge the residents of St. Petersburg to seek out and engage in activities to support a literacy lifestyle.
